The California notary fee limit
California sets a maximum fee of $15 for each signature a notary notarizes on an acknowledgment, and $15 for each person given an oath or affirmation on a jurat. A notary may charge less, but never more, for the notarial act itself.
What a mobile notary costs
A mobile notary travels to your home, office, hospital, or other location. California does not set travel fees, so they vary with distance, time of day, and urgency. A reputable notary tells you the total, notarial fees plus travel, before you confirm. SD Fast Notary always quotes the full price upfront.
Pricing examples
- 1 signer, 1 document, 1 signature: $15 + travel
- 2 signers on 1 deed: 2 signatures × $15 = $30 + travel
- 1 signer, 3 documents: 3 × $15 = $45 + travel
- Loan signing package: one flat rate, usually paid by the title, escrow, or signing company
- Apostille help: notarization fee + Secretary of State fee + our service fee, quoted upfront
How to keep the cost down
- Have every signer present at the same appointment.
- Bring all documents at once, complete and unsigned.
- Make sure each signer has acceptable, current photo ID. See what ID you need.
- Book ahead when you can, because same-day and late-night requests can carry a higher travel fee.
Frequently asked questions
Is a notary free anywhere in San Diego?
Some banks and credit unions notarize for their own customers at no charge, but availability varies and they often won't do real estate or certain documents. A mobile notary costs more but comes to you, often the same day.
Can a California notary charge more than $15 per signature?
No. The notarial fee is capped at $15 per signature. Travel, printing, and other services are separate and must be agreed in advance.
Who pays for a loan signing notary?
For most refinances and purchases, the title company, escrow company, or signing service pays the notary. Ask your escrow officer if you are unsure.
Do you charge for a canceled appointment?
If we have already traveled to you, a trip fee may apply. Call (858) 859-1779 as early as possible if your plans change.
